When I started in model railroading the only track I had was Bachmann ez track. That worked well for a quick loop to set up and run a train around, but when it came to a bigger layout I was looking more at flex track options. The first set of track I got was Atlas code 100. This track is wonderful, easy to use and to connect with joiners. On a trip to the hobby store I found code 83. I was told by the store owner that code 83 was more prototypical and that it looks better than code 100 due to the lower rail height. He said I could connect the two with a set of step joiners, so I bought them both and went home to work on the layout.

BIG MISTAKE!

Trying to connect the code 83 to the code 100 just created a massive headache. The step joiners were more difficult to put on, and when trying to slip them on they would bend in the middle due to the step. It made track laying more difficult than it had ever been with the code 100. The difficulty slowed down progress, and when I became frustrated enough with it, I would just stop all together. So if you decide to start laying track stick with one code. Do not try to switch them in the middle! It will save you a massive headache and frustration!
