These are some HO rolling stock I completed a while back. They were weathered using Testors Dullcote and weathering powder. I think they turned out great, with the Shell car being more grimy than the lightly weathered B&O.
To complete these I used black, brown, dark red, and light red powders. Before applying the chalk I put on latex gloves, this helps keep your hands and cars clean. Then I cleaned the cars with rubbing alcohol and a make up wedge, any percentage works. This removes any oils from your fingers stuck on from previous handling. Using Testors Dullcote I sprayed every side with an even coat, this helps the powder stick to the cars. I used makeup wedges to apply the chalk. The wedges hold up very well when going over the finer pieces. You will not need to use many wedges to get the job done, I had used Q-tips before and went through dozens because they fell apart easily. One thing I did not do, which will be done next time, is spray a layer of Dullcote over each application of powder. This would prevent the next touch of powder from rubbing away the previous. Once I was happy with how it looked, I sprayed a final layer of Dullcote to seal it and prevent it from coming off on my fingers.
This way of weathering is very inexpensive and looks very good! It is a great alternative to buying an air brush and paint. Plus if you mess up it can easily be washed off and start again, something you cannot do with paint.
