I made a couple posts a few days ago on how to apply Woodland Scenics' Smooth It. Well, today I want to talk to you all about sanding down the roads to make them smooth. Recently, I have been working with Sculptamold to add a ground layer over the foam so that it is not so flat. That's where some problems with the Smooth It came up.
To sand down Smooth It you definitely want to use a fine grit sand paper between 200-300 grit. This helps with smoothing out the pavement, but without taking too much off the top. My mistake came up here. I originally thought I should sand down the roads as far as possible because I did not want them to look like they were sticking up out of the ground. I did that with all the roads I currently have on my layout.
I did not want to get Sculptamold on my roads because it would add unnecessary lumps and bumps. This has become a bit difficult. Due to the roads being so flat, there is no edge to push the Sculptamold up to, it just overflows onto the road. Now, I have been able to limit the amount that gets on the road, and if I have to, I can pick off the dried plaster with my fingers. If I had left the edge, however, I don't think I would have to worry about this as much. The Sculptamold would not flow over if the edge of the roads were there to stop it.
When you go to sand down your Smooth It, do not take it down very far. Sand away the random bumps, but don't sand it even with the baseboard. You will run into a headache trying to constantly keep Sculptamold off the roads!
